Shalorus starts WEC 53 main card with decision win

Kamal Shalorus kicked off the main card of the last-ever WEC event with a split decision win over Bart Palaszewski. The judges saw it 30-27, 28-29 and 29-28 for Shalorus, who is 7-0-2. Palaszewski falls to 35-14.

Shalorus used his wrestling right away, taking Palaszewski down in the first round. He followed up with punishing body shots. He landed shots from standing and from the ground. Palaszewski returned to his feet in final minute, but Shalorus took advantage of the standing position and battered Palaszewski's legs.

The second round featured plenty of stand-up action. Shalorus, an international-level wrestler, preferred to stay on his feet and strike with Palaszewski. Shalorus did take the fight to the ground near the end of the round, but when Palaszewski got back to his feet, he gestured for Shalorus to bring it on.

Palaszewski used knees to try to hold off a Shalorus takedown in the final round, but Shalorus finally was able to bring the fight to the ground about halfway through the round. Palaszewski got back to his feet in the final minute and finished strong with myriad strikes. He landed a knee that appeared to rock a tired Shalorus, but he couldn't finish him off.

"I put all my strength to finish him. I made a mistake and slowed down in the first round," Shalorus said after the fight.

What's to Become of MMA's Top Heavyweights in 2011?

Muhammad Ali used to say that the heavyweight champion of the world was the champion of all champions. Of course, it's possible he was a little biased.

It's easy to understand the appeal of the heavyweights. It's the biggest, baddest kids on the block vying to see who's tougher. That's part of why Brock Lesnar - a man who looks like the grown-up version of a high school bully straight out of central casting, crew-cut still intact - has proved to be such an irresistible enigma to MMA fans. The fact that there's footage of him dancing around in a sombrero and flipping off the top rope probably doesn't hurt either.

But while 2010 may have been the year of the heavyweight in MMA, with everyone from Lesnar to Fedor Emelianenko to current UFC champ Cain Velasquez rapidly swapping places in the ranks, the division seems to be in tatters heading into 2011.

Cerrone punches his ticket to the UFC with win over Horodecki

Donald Cerrone has been one of the mainstays in the WEC, but with the merger of the promotion into the UFC, nothing was guaranteed. Cerrone was likely to get the invite to the big promotion but certainly didn't have room to jerk around and lose to Chris Horodecki.

He didn't. Early in the second round, Cerrone hit the deck and transitioned to a triangle choke. The veteran stayed patient with Horodecki and eventually locked on the submission hold where it was unbearable for the 23-year-old to continue at 2:43 of the second round.

Cerrone will now go from being a big fish in a little pond to a small fish in the biggest MMA pond in the sport. The 155-pound division in the UFC is extremely deep. The lanky lightweight should provide some great matchup opportunities for UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

"The Cowboy" called out Cole Miller following the fight. Miller has a win over Cerrone's teammate Leonard Garcia.

Horodecki was very much in the fight in the first round. In spite of giving away a lot in the reach department, Horodecki was having success getting inside and landing combinations to the head and body. There were several trips to the floor, and Cerrone looked like the slicker fighter in the grappling department. Cerrone won the first round, but it was competitive.

For some reason between rounds, Horodecki's trainer Shawn Tompkins asked the fighter to grapple and get it to the ground in the second.

Horodecki listened and got it down but was almost immediately in danger, in the grips of Cerrone's long legs.

Cerrone (13-3, 6-3 WEC) moves over to UFC with the potential of being a Chris Lytle-type. The MMA veteran has won seven postfight honors during his time with UFC.

Cerrone, 27, has the same exciting, go-for-broke approach, that'll make him a big hit with his new fans over in the UFC.

Horodecki (16-3, 2-2 UFC) may have cost himself a gig with the UFC. That said, he's a young dude who probably deserves at least one more fight with Zuffa.
