Oliveira wins over Escudero with third-round tap at UFN 22

Charles Oliveira continued his comet-like trajectory with a third-round submission of "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Efrain Escudero at Ultimate Fight Night 22.

In the first round, Oliveira seemed frustrated by Escudero's defense. Escudero held off a takedown and held Oliveira in the clinch. When the two finally went to the ground, Escudero ended up on top. Near the end of the round, Escudero finally threw some big elbows from the top.

Oliveira continued to work for the takedown in the second round, but again, Escudero took Oliveira's back when the two hit the canvas. When they returned to their feet, Oliveira had the better stand-up. He was able to land leg kick after leg kick, without receiving many counters from Escudero.

Both fighters were the recipients of groin shots early in the third round. Escudero walked his off, but it took Oliveira a while to recover. When the fight was restarted, Oliveira drove Escudero into the fence and then threw him down. Escudero reached for Oliveira's leg, which opened the door. Oliveira jumped on his back and sunk in a tight, standing rear-naked choke, forcing a tap from Escudero at 2:25 into the third round.

Oliveira, a 20-year-old from Brazil, first turned heads at UFC Live on Versus 2, where he armbarred Darrin Elkins in just 0:41 seconds.

Kenny Florian hires wrestling coach after facing top wrestler

Never accuse Kenny Florian of not learning from his mistakes. The former contender at lightweight was outwrestled by Gray Maynard at UFC 118. To keep that from happening again, Florian has changed up his training plans. From an interview on Sherdog Radio Network's "It's Time!":

"I'm more motivated than ever. I'm pissed, to be honest. I want to crush my training. That's what I'm focused on right now. I just hired the assistant wrestling coach at Boston University (Sean Gray) to be my wrestling coach here in Boston and I have other plans for a lot of other things as far as training goes."

Florian is to be applauded for not standing pat after losing. With the win over Florian, Maynard earned a shot at Frankie Edgar's title. No matter who wins that bout, a Division I wrestler will hold the lightweight belt, since Maynard wrestled for Michigan State while Edgar wrestled at Clarion and coached at Rutgers.

But it remains to be seen how much of a difference it will make when the top fighters have wrestled for most of their lives. Hiring a coach from BU -- who finished 53rd in the NCAA this year -- is a good start, but hardly the complete package.

Jim Miller deals much bigger Gleison Tibau a loss at UFN 22

Jim Miller's been called midget by a previous opponent and he was facing a giant of the lightweight division in Gleison Tibau, but challengers are quickly learning that the little guy has plenty of fight in him. Miller consistently found a home for his straight left and avoided staying on the ground against Tibau, an excellent ground and pounder. In a good back-and-forth fight, Miller picked up another UFC win via unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, at Ultimate Fight Night 22 in Austin, Texas. It was the fifth straight win with the promotion for the mighty mite. Tibau (31-7, 7-5 UFC) is simply massive for the 155-pound division. After re-hydrating, he walks to the Octagon at well over 170 pounds while Miller is a small lightweight at just 5-foot-6. But Miller never had an issue from a power standpoint in Wednesday night's fight. Tibau scored several solid double-leg takedowns throughout the fight but could never maintain the position to do any real damage. Meanwhile, when they were standing and striking, Miller was the faster and more accurate fighter. He landed a few good leg kicks and his left hand was the difference in the fight. Give credit to Tibau, he's got a chin. He got blasted several times and stayed on his feet. The closest he came to going down was in the second round. Miller (17-2, 7-1 UFC) crushed him with a left and Tibau's knees buckled. The Brazilian got on his horse, literally running to his left. Once Miller caught him, he was able to score a quick takedown. But Tibau recovered quickly and rose to his feet in seconds. That scenario and a better land rate for Miller was more than enough to impress the judges.

Vitor Belfort vs. Anderson Silva Soon, Marquardt-Okami Winner Next

Filed under: UFCChael Sonnen's positive steroid test has created a domino effect in the UFC's middleweight division, and the biggest beneficiary is Vitor Belfort, who will be the next challenger to Anderson Silva's middleweight title.

UFC President Dana White announced on Twitter that Belfort will fight Silva for the belt. Contrary to reports that an injury forced Belfort out of his previously scheduled bout with Yushin Okami, White said Belfort is healthy and has simply been moved to the top of the list of title contenders.
